Special Therapy

I have attended specialized training in all specific models of therapy I use

BWRT

Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT) is a therapy  that uses the way the brain functions to change how we respond to situations. I find the therapy particularly useful for anxiety and phobia and to change ingrained perceptions of self.  I have attended training for Level 1&2 BWRT

CBT/REBT

Cognitive-behaviour therapy(CBT)  is one of the most used therapies worldwide. There are many studies confirming the efficacy of cognitive-behaviour therapy. Rational-emotive behaviour therapy (REBT) is a form of cognitive-behaviour therapy that has  a specific view on how belief systems need to change for people to overcome their difficulties. I find this therapy particularly useful for treatment of depression and anxiety.

DBT

Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a skills based program and aims to empower a person to learn new skills that can be applied in their daily lives. The skills are used to improve Mindfulness, Emotional Regulation, Distress Tolerance and Interpersonal functioning. I have found this therapy particularly useful for people struggling with Borderline Personality features and people with Bi-polar mood disorder.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a therapy that aims to bring sub-conscious drives to a conscious level of awareness in order to change. I find hypnosis useful to help people gain insight into themselves and their behaviour. The insights gained from Ego-state therapy and medical hypno-analysis are good  foundations to identify therapeutic objectives.

Psychological Assessments

Psychological assessments vary according to the purpose of the  assessment. I mostly do assessment for the purpose of diagnosis or to assist the psycho-therapeutic process and includes assessment of reported symptoms of clinical disorders, personality, mental processes, emotional functioning, screening of neurological functioning, behaviours and social and environmental factors. Methods used include interpreting information gathered during the interview and sometimes psychometric tests and questionnaires. The second purpose of assessments done is of psycho-emotional functioning to make recommendations as requested by insurance companies, medical aids and places of work or study. These assessments are often done in conjunction with functional assessments done by occupational therapists. Specialized assessments are referred to appropriate service providers.

Treating Depression

Depression is one of the most common and debilitating mental health problems.  According to the World Health Organization, more than 265 million people struggle with depression, yet misconceptions are still prevalent that it is not real or ‘all in the mind’ and that people are ”looking for attention’ and should ‘snap out of it”. The sad truth is that severe depression can be fatal through suicide. Symptoms range from mild to severe and even though mild symptoms can often be treated with psychotherapy alone, moderate to severe depression needs both psycho-therapeutic and psycho-pharmacological intervention. Living a functional and good life with a mood disorder such as depression or bi-polar depression is possible with the right help and should not just be endured or left untreated.

Addiction

Addiction at best leads to a tremendous waste of both personal and financial resources and at worst destroys families and lives and ultimately can lead to death. Even though people often turn to substances because they are struggling with a psychological condition or feel they can not cope with stressors, substances make matters worse and causes the psychological condition to worsen and stressors to escalate.  Even when people start using substances socially, without specific stressors, addiction may develop that leads to their lives descending into chaos. Breaking with addiction and staying sober is extremely difficult as there are both psychological and physiological components to addiction. Further more, having another psychological condition that is not diagnosed and untreated is a major risk for relapse. For this reason a person should seek as much help as possible with the problem of addiction. The best start is usually an in-patient program and thereafter to continue with psycho-therapeutic treatment, psychiatric management of co-morbid conditions and support groups such as the AA / NA fellowship.

Loss and Grieving

Significant loss and the grieving process can be a very difficult life experience. For this reason, experiencing loss and grieving is often the reason for people to seek psychological help. Significant loss can also trigger other psychological conditions such as depression. The grieving process can often be complicated by multiple factors and a person can become stuck in a space where their grief consumes their life. Working with somebody in their grief is done with kindness and respect to hopefully bring them to a place where they can again live their lives.

Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, phobias and panic disorder. People may experience symptoms of anxiety without even knowing what is making them anxious or may know why they are anxious, but the symptoms are so intense that it is overwhelming and debilitating. People with generalized anxiety often worry excessively over unimportant things. Simply trying to stay calm and not be anxious does not work. There are however many interventions that can be made through psychotherapy that do help.

Trauma and Stress Related Disorders

Trauma and stress related disorders develop after a person had been exposed to a trauma or significant stressors. This group of disorders include

Post-traumatic stress disorder, Adjustment disorder and Acute stress disorder. Trauma and stress related disorders cause significant distress and is debilitating and therefore need specialized treatment. Each individual and situation is different, but brain-working recursive therapy and neuro-linguistic programming have proven to be an effective treatment in many cases.
